TGIF

This Friday, I finally found some time to hang out with my old roommate, Miya. She had an old friend from high school visiting her from URI so the three of us decided to go out for some dinner. Max Brenner's would have been our first choice but the place was PACKED so we settled on Umami, a sushi place on Newbury. The food was awesome and the company was even better.

(Sorry for the terrible photo quality - these photos were taken on my phone.)

Japanese and Thrifting

This week was a bit hectic. I was piled with homework and I was also scheduled a lot at my job at Free People. So in short - I basically worked all week. Even when this weekend rolled around I still had quite a bit of school work to do as well as a couple of hours at work.

I was able to take some time out of my busy schedule to have a little bit of fun with a couple of friends. We started out at the Garment District. If you're not from around the Boston area the Garment District is pretty much a cross between a thrift shop and a costume shop. There is also a "by-the-pound" section where you can sift through piles (literally piles) of clothing in search of some good finds. I had always been a little grossed out at the though of going through piles and piles of secondhand clothing that has been sitting on the floor for ages and ages, but yesterday I decided to grit my teeth and just do it. I can safely say that this paid off. I ended up finding quite a few good finds - mostly things that I hope to doctor once I find the time. No worries I'll post photos once I doctor them.

We left the Garment District and headed back into Boston for some Japanese food before I had to run off to work. We stopped at Mentei for some delicious japanese noodle soup and shrimp dumplings. With my mother being from Singapore (a small island city just off of the coast of Malaysia.) I have been eating food like this for as long as I can remember. One thing that my mom always said she missed about Singapore was the food. Since her passing last year, it has become a sort of comfort food (rather than burgers, fries, etc.) it is as if a little bit of her comes back to me, to comfort me and to tell me to slow down and just breathe.

Some more dorm details

Here a just a few more photos of our dorm room (the pretty parts only.) Now that Sophie's here the place is looking so much more like home.

One of my favorite Brimfield finds - my palm reader guide - and just a few of my favorite statement rings.

Our forever growing tea collection.

Our collective wardrobe.
Nothing but laughs in this place.

These curtains and dreamcatcher were all handmade by Sophie.

On Sophie: Free People top, pants, pendant and socks; Freebird boots, vintage jewelry
Sophie and I had some fun in the park this past Friday. We did some exploring and took some photos for her Free People Me profile - in-case you didn't guess by all of the Free People she is wearing.

Senior Portraits 2014

I've known this boy for quite some time. We really bonded when we on our high school's trip to Italy. I even took him to my junior prom that same year. We had so much fun scouted out places to shoot. Unbelievable that he is graduating this year! Congratulations David!

I have known Costas for as long as I have known my best friend of 15 years. It has been incredible to see this guy grow up. We had a blast shooting his senior session around Four Oaks Country Club, the country that his parents now own and also where I had the pleasure of working this summer. Congratulations Costas!

Congratulations to these two great guys! I am so proud of you and I am so happy that I got to see you off on this new chapter of your lives.

Jamaica Plain Music Festival

Strawberry-thyme lemonade
While a good amount of the Boston population was gearing up for a day in City Hall Square for Boston Calling, I was headed in the opposite direction, to Jamaica Plain.

I wasn't sure what to expect when my roommate invited me to the Jamaica Plain Music Festival to see her boyfriend, Jesse play. I had never been to Jamaica Plain, despite my proximity to it and I also had never been to a music festival in this part of the state. When I finally arrived (after getting on the wrong 39 bus) I found that the festival was set in a nice grassy field just off of South Huntington. I was pleasantly surprised by the lack of concrete. As soon as I found my group (a pack of Simmons College students) I kicked off my sandals and squished my toes in the soft ground accompanied by some strawberry-thyme lemonade.

The highlight of the festival (at least for me) was when the Nickel and Dime Band took the stage clad in an array of outrageous dresses - some even complete with jewelry. Their attire was not to distract though. Musically their was well-done and certainly got most of the crowd up from their seats. I found myself smiling as the band's lead singer, Rick Berlin, sang the lines "like a little girl," as a group of little girls hula hooped at the base of the stage. I enjoyed the show and I look forward to attending more of performances by the Nickel and Dime Band.

Some sweet dreads on this little girl. Too cute!
An awesome festival look that caught my eye.

Alive and Well in the City

As soon as our classes got out on Friday afternoon, Sophie, Dakota, and I hopped on the T and made our way to Chinatown for some bubble tea! Neither of them had ever had it before so I figured (me being half asian) that I should be the one they should try it with. Dakota and I actually ended up getting the same kind - passion fruit green tea with lychee jelly - while Sophie got almond milk tea with bobba. We sipped on our bubble teas, gradually making our way back to campus from Chinatown, making stops at Park Street, Boston Commons, and even into my work to pick up some socks. It was definitely a wonderful Friday afternoon to be alive and well in the city.
